Voyagers

Membership

The Voyagers is a group of clergypersons with background in Rabbi Friedman's applications of Bowen Theory to clergy, congregations, and leadership, as well as a desire to work on differentiation of self. For those who serve in congregational ministry, and/or are involved in preparation and support of clergy, the Voyagers offers an opportunity to continue learning and working on self through:

  • presentations by outstanding thinkers and leaders in the Bowen/Friedman axis,
  • presentations on ways in which this theory can be considered theologically,
  • work in family of origin groups,
  • presentations of congregational case studies, and
  • involvement in a group of clergy with similar commitments.

Bowen Theory has been described as "a way of thinking that shapes a way of being."  Individuals who have worked with this thinking over a period of years have found that regular contact with the theory - such as that provided through the Voyagers - is crucial to their 'being' in this way.  The hope is that those  who become involved in the Voyagers are able to do so on a continuing basis, rather than just 'now and then.'

The Voyagers meet twice each year, usually in the Washington DC area. Meetings begin at 1:00 p.m. on Day 1 (Monday or Tuesday), and finish before lunch on Day 4 (Thursday or Friday).

Annual registration for the program is $700 (includes a spring meeting and a fall meeting).  This covers program costs and several meals.  Lodging costs are the responsibility of the participants.

Individuals who are interested in joining the Voyagers are asked to send a letter of application responding to the following:

  1. What is your background and training in Friedman's thinking and/or Bowen Theory?
  2. How do you anticipate your participation in the Voyagers will be helpful to you and your work.
  3. Please describe briefly your ministry experience as well as your current setting.
  • Please include a family of origin diagram (genogram).
  •
